Craignell2 Starter Kit

The Craignell2 starter Kits enable the bench development and debug of designs and contain the following: Craignell-2 module (XC3S700A FPGA), Prog2 Programming Lead, Programming Adaptor, Intercept Module.

We also offer a variant where the Intercept Module has sprung pins fitted to support a simple serial port with RX and TX with all all other I/O pins just pass through. This allows a code tap or a monitor function to be implemented in the Craignell2 without affecting normal pin functions.

The pin matrix on the Intercept module allows the wiring of the power and ground to that required by your application and use of the Craignell2 module. You can also leave unconnected for pass through uses where power is taken direct from a hosting board.

The pin matrix also allow the optional wiring of the Intercept Module serial port TX and RX lines to any pin not used for power already or the sprung points if fitted.

The FTDI FT232R, on the Intercept module, has drivers for Windows and Linux available allowing it to be used with simple terminal emulator programs or more advanced software.

We can make all of the wired connections to your specification before shipping. Please contact us if you need a specific combination. With power connections made on the Intercept Module the hosted Craignell2 can be powered from a USB port. Please note in some some circumstances this may need a power hub to deliver sufficient current. as some PC and Laptop USB ports may not have sufficient output.

We can also offer a variant of this kit with a XilinxTM USB Programming Cable.

We can also offer an optional UK Plug USB PSU - other countries may be available soon.

Using The Kit

The starter kit is an easy way to start developing with your Craignell2. You can use the intercept module to power the Craignell2. You can even link in the serial port TX and RX to get a monitor capability (needs FPGA designed in function).

The picture below shows the Intercept Module (bench variant) connected to a laptop as power source with the Craignell2 inserted and powered. The programming adaptor and Xilinx USB cable are also connected for JTAG operation.
